Jonah's Back!

Jonah has returned to the world comics, but not to The Beano where he originated, instead he is now appearing in the virtual pages of The Dandy, and is illustrated by Mike Pearse! Above is the first of the three strips that appears in issue #13, and I've quickly put it together to show here, but to read the others you'll have to buy the latest Dandy from the website.

Sadly the stories are very short and I can imagine it would be quite hard to sink a boat in just five or six panels - but then again this is Jonah! It's less of the "sink every ship he steps on" in this version, and more of the "use up lots of sea jokes", but that's not to say it isn't any good!

I'll finish this post with a classic Jonah illustrated by Ken Reid! This one appeared in Beano #850, dated November 1st 1958. Click on the image for maximum size.

Nothing can compare to Ken Reid's version. Although The Dandy (I think) revised the character a few years ago, and it looked quite nice. Am I right in thinking it was drawn by Ken H. Harrison?

@Kid

It's Keith Robson actually, a very good artist - also drew General Jumbo for the annuals in the 1990s.

I'd pay whatever they wanted for a hardback collection of every one of Reid's Jonah strips...

The Keith Robson ones were fun too, while they lasted. As for this one? I LOVE Mike Pearse's Bash Street Kids, but this one's not doing a lot for me right now.

The Keith Robson ones did look nice, but as you say nothing can compare to Ken Reid's version. I'd love to see a collection of the strips - maybe one day...

One of those "NO WAY" moments - took me totally off guard here. It's nice to see Mike still drawing away but, as it's been said, his humour just can't be contained for a six-panel comic strip - especially a virtual one. Has to be an easier way of getting Jonah's latest adventures...

But thanks for the info all the same! And yes, we are long overdue for a Ken Reid collected edition in print, Jonah and all.
