Bernie in The Beano!

Inside the above issue of Whizzer and Chips, a character called Bernie Banks, star of the strip Memory Banks, made one of my all time favourite crossovers! Illustrated by Mark Bennington, Bernie not only crossed over into two other Fleetway comics, but also managed to slip into a D.C Thomson title! This wasn't the only time Whizzer and Chips, or Fleetway in general, mocked D.C Thomson, with the most famous on the back cover of the final Buster!

There were a lot of fun crossovers in the history of British comics, but so far this one is my firm favourite!

Ha, that's great! Understandable mistake on his part though - when I was a youngster I had no trouble telling the Beano from the Dandy from the Topper, but always got the Fleetway characters mixed up (must be the way they ate each other up over the years, and with all the old annuals I had from car boot sales).

Mark Bennington is a great writer...love his goon show type scripts he did for the centre pages and Buster's story...

a great find...

My personal favourite part is Benny walking into The Beano! How did he manage to go so wrong that he did that!?

Mark did some great, crazy stuff for the centre pages of Buster later on, Captain Crucial, Lucy Lastic, Coronation Stream...
